Learning vocabulary is a very important part of learning a language. The more words you know, the more you will be able to understand what you hear and read.
Below is a list of words and standard abbreviations culled from a single issue of "Time" magazine (December 29, 2009):
The 64-words list from one issue of "Time" magazine is not an isolated instance of ordinary reading matter requiring a solid vocabulary.
In addition to your appearance and the way you carry yourself, people will judge you based on the words that come out of your mouth. Even if you are a mathematical genius, having a poor vocabulary will send across a message that you're not very intelligent. It is especially important for technically oriented people to pay attention to their vocabulary.

Traditionally following methods are adopted to improve vocabulary -
- Readers predict meaning of a word from the context in which it appears.
- Using prefix, suffix , roots etc .. to infer meaning of words.
- Reading a lot of news , magazine and journals and learning new words on the fly
- Lastly and most boring Reciting and learning through repetition .
These techniques though good in their own right but are not configured to easy the burden in learning vocabulary.
